Have you noticed how a shade looks great on you and a different shade of the same color is a total disaster? You know you look good in green, let’s say, but trying on clothes in certain shades means guaranteed disaster.
The reason is that chromatics goes further than what you’ve learned in school. In theory, yellow, red, orange and the related shades are warm colors, whereas blue, green and purple are cool (or cold) colors. You might be wondering what all this has to do with why some colors flatter you, while others belittle your looks. Well, even your complexion has a pigment that is either warm or cool. This might sound weird since living humans are warm and it would only make sense for our skin tone to be warm as well… but things are not that simple. So basically this means that you must determine what kind of skin tone you have and therefore, what tones look good on you. Of course, as we have the hourglass body type, we have the medium skin tone- any color goes with it! Even so, we must address the topic for those of us who are not as fortunate.
The way to test this is to go look at your wardrobe and grab the neutrals. By the way, the neutrals don’t only include nude, beige and brown – grey and dark blue also come in the picture because these aren’t pretentious colors and they can represent the base of any outfit. After you get your hands on these neutrals, wrap a sheet of fabric around your neck, place your lovely face in front of a mirror and take a good look at yourself. If you have the opportunity of doing this in natural light, it’s better. Now, colorimetry is weird and complicated and if you really want to know everything about your skin tone, you can go get a professional look at you. However, if you need a quick and inexpensive fix, keep reading to find out what color shades suit you.
The big idea is incredibly simple: get yourself a silver scarf and a gold scarf (or a silver and a gold top, whatever comes in handy). In natural light, with your hair up and no make-up on, try on the two scarves.
If you look better with the silver scarf, it means you’re in for cool colors.
If the gold one suits you, warm colors are exactly what you need.
If you can’t decide between the two of them, it means that you’re lucky and the undertone of your skin is neutral and you can wear both warm and cool colors. Even so, don’t forget that there’s usually a preference and that there are warm, cold, intense or pure shades for every color. This is why it’s best if you do the test with various shades of colors, till you find out exactly what to wear.
This way, the next time you go shopping, you’ll know what shades you should go for. This will save you from unpleasant, worrisome task of trying to figure out why your skin looks dreadful, when in fact it doesn’t, it will save you energy when trying to combine different colors and it will save you time the next time you go shopping!
